I noticed some confusion about what exactly this devise is used for.

The main purpose of this is not to upgrade to 802.11n from 802.11g, although it can be used for that, and you will be getting faster speeds with n. (N has far better throughput reliability, speed, and distance--with a caveat.) It is to be able to use the new 5 GHz band to connect to your wireless router--and you most likely will be getting faster speeds with that band too. But the main reason you may want to do this is if you live in a heavily congested wireless network area. Your neighbors' internet networks might be interfering with your connection to your wireless router.

Set n on 5 GHz only in your router homepage, and you will be getting the fastest speed out of your connection possible, along with the least amount of interference. While n is supposed to give least distance, if you have your connected devise in a straight line from your router you shouldn't see a dropoff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Linux Compatibility, June 28, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
Update November 11, 2012:
Changed Stars from 3 to 5.
Retested this adaptor both on an encrypted connection, and an open wifi.
At this point, on ArchLinux, adaptor worked flawlessly. The reason for the change may be improved Arch software.

Original review follows:

For those of you who are looking for a USB wifi adaptor that is well supported by the Linux kernel, this unit is a definite possibility.

I used this unit for a long time with Arch Linux. And until very recently, it worked fine. Suddenly, it was problematic. I worked to troubleshoot it for some time, without luck.

I determined the device would work fine in a new install, but somehow it would fail in an updated system. As you may well know, Arch Linux gets updates continuously.

Buyer beware.
Steve.

I've now got a few TP-Link devices and must admit that I quite impressed with them. For the price there really isn't much on the market at the moment that can compare.

The TP-Link USB wireless adapter is a breeze to setup. The included CD contains everything that you need and you don't really need to even look at the included instruction booklet.

This wireless adapter covers the gamut of commonly used wireless speeds and has the added 5Ghz that appears to be becoming quite popular at the moment.

I tested this device on a number of configurations. First with Windows 7 with a G based wireless router. Next I tested with a wireless N Router then I set my N router to 5Ghz only (as opposed to the standard/more common 2.4Ghz for wireless N). Every time the TP-Link managed to connect and worked flawlessly.

To test the 5Ghz mode I copied a large file from one system with this TP-Link attached, to another system that was wired to my router on a 1... Read more
